Our Church
Our Church
We are often asked who we are and what we stand for. It’s simple: we are a church who love God and love others. We seek to live this purpose every day through the practices below.
We'd love you to join us on our journey.
Our practices
We try to express our purpose by relying upon the grace, mercy, patience, kindness, power and
love of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Meet
We will meet together, adults and children, to listen to God, learn about God, worship God and put His words into practice.
Share
We will share our lives with one another, celebrate our faith together, eat meals together, have fun and laugh together.
Love
We will love one another and
be loved
Forgive
We will forgive one another and be forgiven.
Challenge
We will challenge and encourage one another and be encouraged and challenged.
Welcome
We will welcome all and do all we can to help others trust and follow Jesus
Serve
We will serve the community of Portobello and surrounding areas, reaching out in love and seeking its peace and prosperity.
Join
We will join God on His mission in the world.
Get involved
Wherever you are on your faith journey, we want you to be able to find a place at Portobello Baptist Church, and to receive love, support and opportunity to help you become part of our church family.
Belonging
We value church membership. It’s a way of saying you belong here, and that you’re committed to living out our purpose and practices among the church family – but also that we’re here for you too. To find out more, speak to our pastor Glenn or a member of the leadership team.
Giving
As part of our service to God and the local Christian community, we give financially to the church. There’s a collection box on Sundays but you can also give regularly from your bank account – simply email treasurer@pbc.scot and we’ll get in touch.
Our history
Portobello Baptist Church was planted in 1892 by a group of people with a desire to see a Baptist church established in this part of the city. They engaged in significant evangelistic endeavours throughout the community and, as the church grew, moved around a few buildings before settling in our current home in 1919 – a former town hall and cinema. Our church has continued with that same sense of purpose ever since. Today, more than 100 years later, our practices are rooted in a long history of faithful service and a commitment to reach out with the good news of Jesus.
Safe and caring
We’re committed to making sure Portobello Baptist Church is always a safe and caring place for children, young people and protected adults – but acknowledge that anyone can become the victim of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and neglect. We have a safeguarding policy and a dedicated safeguarding team. If you have any concerns for a child or vulnerable adult, please email safeguarding@pbc.scot
